How to book BJT in Japan, step by step

BJT is booked online through Pearson VUE. Here is the whole path, from creating an account to printing your certificate.

Short answer

The test costs ¥8,000 in Japan, tax included. You choose the day, the time and the test centre. You leave with a score report, and the certificate with your photo is ready three days later.

  • ¥8,000 BJT fee in Japan, tax included
  • ¥7,500 JLPT fee in Japan, for comparison
  • Varies BJT fee abroad, shown when you book

Each attempt is paid separately, so three BJT attempts cost ¥24,000. The organiser announced a fee revision from 1 April 2026; check the amount on the booking screen before you pay.

Booking

  1. Create a Pearson VUE account

Sign up on the Pearson VUE BJT page. Type your name exactly as it appears on your passport or residence card. The name on your ID must match the booking on test day.

  2. Choose a test centre, date and time

The site shows centres near your address. There are centres across Japan, from Sapporo to Naha, including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Pick any open slot.

  3. Check your details and pay

Pay ¥8,000 by Visa, Mastercard or American Express. In Japan you can also pay by bank transfer through Pearson VUE customer service. Some companies and schools give vouchers instead.

On test day

  1. Bring two forms of ID

For example, your passport and residence card, with the same name you booked with. Pens and paper are not allowed; the centre gives you something to write notes on.

  2. Check in

Staff check your IDs and take your photo for the certificate. Your bag and phone go into a locker.

  3. Sit the test

First you learn how the screen works and agree to a confidentiality statement within five minutes. Then the three parts begin. The whole session takes about two hours.

On test day
Part Questions Time
1. Listening 25 about 45 min
2. Listening and reading 25 about 30 min
3. Reading 30 30 min

Every question has four answer options. The two listening parts take more than half of the test time, so practise with business audio: phone calls, meetings and briefings.

After the test

  1. Take your score report home

You get a score report at the centre as soon as you finish. It shows your total score from 0 to 800.

  2. Print the certificate after 3 days

Sign in to your Pearson VUE account and open "View Score Reports". The certificate shows your photo, score, level and a rank for each part. Use it for visa and job applications.

  3. Retake after 3 months if you need to

If you sat on 1 October, you can sit again from 1 January. Book the retake early so you get the slot you want.
