Where BJT counts

Two numbers matter: 400 and 480.

BJT has no pass or fail. You get a score from 0 to 800, and immigration rules name exact thresholds.

400 counts as N2

  • 10 points in the Highly Skilled Professional system
  • Japanese requirement for the Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services visa
  • Japanese requirement for the Business Manager visa
  • University admission requirement

480 counts as N1

  • 15 points in the Highly Skilled Professional system
  • Designated Activities visa for graduates of Japanese universities

Where BJT does not help

  • Specified Skilled Worker and Employment for Skill Development visas: these use JFT-Basic or JLPT N4
  • Job ads that ask for JLPT by name. Check with the employer first

Questions

What is BJT?

The Business Japanese Proficiency Test by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation. It is taken on a computer, lasts about two hours, has 80 questions in three sections, and gives a score from 0 to 800 with levels J5 to J1+.

Is a BJT score of 400 the same as N2?

No. It is a different test. Immigration rules accept 400 as equal to N2 for the visas listed above, and 480 as equal to N1. Some employers ask for JLPT by name, so check with them.

How do I book the exam?

Through Pearson VUE, with test centres across Japan and in other countries. You choose the date and time.

Is the forecast a guarantee?

No. It is an estimate based on your answers in our mock exams. It shows where you are and what to work on.

Are you connected to the exam organiser?

No. Dojo Journal is independent. Our questions are written for practice and are not taken from the real exam.
